Introducing Kurma

About Kurma

Our story

– by Claus Grzesch, our founder

“30 years ago, I was learning yoga under B.K.S. Iyengar when he pointed at the green non-slip carpet underlay I was standing on and said “These are very good. Made in Germany. Interesting to know.” He then chuckled and left. It was this very sentence that initiated our persistent strive to provide the best mats to our yoga community.

Back in Germany I contacted the carpet underlay manufacturer and teamed up with them to develop a proper yoga mat – one of the first of its kind. In fact, even without advertising, that first mat became so popular that yoga practitioners and studios all over the world contacted me about it.

My continuing exploration of yoga highlighted the need for a thicker mat with good grip and the right balance of hardness for stability and cushioning for seated positioning. This came together in the Komfort mat, which is still extremely popular 20 years later in an improved version called Kurma GRIP.

And our development process is ongoing. Our team and I continue to listen to the evolving needs of yoga practitioners and translate these into products that best support them.”

Our name

Kurma, Sanskrit for “turtle”, symbolizes the unshakeable support of the world. According to ancient mythology, Kurma stabilized the universe during the eternal struggle of the forces of nature, heaven and the underworld. The symbolic values of reliability, support, personal connection and transformation can be found in every Kurma product.

Our sustainable future starts with design

Every part of our process – from the first design ideas to sales – is as sustainable as possible. We believe that we all need to work together to ensure a good future for our children and grandchildren.
Some of our sustainable ideas include:

  • Form follows function. Every Kurma product fills a need which inspired its design and makes our products superior.
  • Multifunctional products are the way forward.
  • High-quality products show our respect for our customers.
  • Increased durability is better for the environment: less manufacturing means less consumption of material and energy, less waste and more time for other things that we find important or enjoyable.
  • Our cut & sew products are designed to be repairable to prolong their lifespan.
  • We encourage second life application and industrial recycling.

“When I’m working on a problem, I never think about beauty. I think only how to solve the problem. But when I have finished, if the solution is not beautiful, I know it is wrong.”

– Richard Buckminster Fuller, American architect, designer, inventor and futurist (1895-1983).

Our manufacturing philosophy

We pride ourselves on offering the best mats and props at a fair price, all produced in fair conditions using non-toxic components. We have honoured this commitment since 1988, and we will continue to do this in the future.

For example, our German-produced yoga mats are made from medical-grade PVC compounds in a zero-waste, zero-emissions process according to STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®. Tested for more than 300 harmful substances, all of our yoga mats are free from phthalates, heavy metals, AZO, DOP and latex.

More than 90% of our products are manufactured in the EU, with all of our mats manufactured in Germany. As a conscientious company, the idea of shifting production to low-wage countries for the sake of profit will never be an option for us.
